Sleep Soundly on Our Favorite Firm Mattresses (2024)

A firm mattress might not sound super welcoming, but if you're someone who needs pressure relief for your joints or better spinal alignment while you sleep, forgoing sink-in softness for a firmer surface can be a game-changer.

Firm mattresses come in numerous styles and a variety of materials to choose from, and each one offers different levels of firmness, temperature regulation, and other qualities. While choosing the best firm mattress is really a matter of personal preference, after testing more than 50 mattresses over the last two years, we've found certain qualities can make all the difference.

In our mattress testing, we've found support, comfort, and pressure relief are the biggest factors (and the details that can change how you sleep). So, how do you decide? We slept on a variety of firm mattresses from different brands and identified the best innerspring, foam, and hybrid mattress options for varying levels of support and comfort.

What We Like

  • 50 firmness options

  • Easy-to-use controls

  • Plush pillow top

  • Individual settings for couples

What We Don't Like

  • Returns come with a fee

We love Saatva’s Solaire Adjustable Firmness Mattress because even when adjusted for a softer feel, it is still more firm than most other mattress options. In testing, it provided us with excellent support, while the three-inch Euro pillow top still offered a feeling of plushness.

We didn’t experience any sort of sinking-in with this product; it’s a true firm mattress that developed no indentations after daily use.

The adjustable nature of this mattress allows you to customize its firmness to your ideal setting. A higher number (there are a total of 50 firmness options) indicates more firmness, which is controlled through dual air chambers. We love that this enables co-sleepers to accommodate each of their individual needs, with mattress sizes of queen and larger.

In terms of materials, this mattress features memory foam and latex, for contouring and pressure point relief. We also like the durability of the Solaire; it feels to us like it was built to last.

We also love that Saatva offers free in-room delivery and setup, and with their professionals on hand it only took about ten minutes to inflate in our home.

Saatva also offers a lifetime warranty, a one-year trial, and free mattress removal. Just be aware: Despite Saatva’s excellent customer service, there is still a return fee should you decide it’s not the right fit for you.

What We Like

  • Lifetime warranty

  • Excellent spine support

  • Body-hugging feel

What We Don't Like

  • May be too tall for some bed frames

Nolah’s Evolution Mattress proves that a high-quality firm mattress can offer all of the benefits of more expensive options without the accompanying price tag.

This value-packed product is available in three firmness options (Plush, Luxury Firm, and Firm). We opted for the Luxury Firm option, which impressed us with excellent support that didn’t allow sinking in, all while feeling like we were being hugged as it conformed to our body shape through the night.

What we really loved about this firm mattress, though, was it only got better with time. After four weeks of consistent use, we found it continued to improve our sleep quality. This hybrid mattress provided support in the right places, a result of the foam cushioning up top and the structural heavy-duty coils underneath.

It also arrived in a box, which left us surprised at just how much quality could fit into such a small package. Lastly, Nolah’s lifetime warranty is a nice perk we appreciate for extra peace of mind.

Just be aware that at 15 inches thick, this is a taller mattress than others on our list. It may be too high with your existing bed frame, especially if you’re someone who struggles to get into a higher bed.

Type: Hybrid | Material: Foam, coils | Firmness: Luxury Firm | Thickness: 15 inches

What We Like

  • Spinal support and alignment

  • No sinking or extra-plush feel

  • Lengthy warranty

What We Don't Like

  • Uncomfortable for stomach sleepers

  • Takes 48 hours to fully expand

As soon as we slept on the Purple Mattress, we appreciated its support, comfort, and performance. We found this mattress has a very mild amount of give and softness, making it fit perfectly into the medium firm category.

That minimal softness is a byproduct of the 2-inch proprietary GelFlex Grid, a hyper elastic polymer that adapts to movement. We loved the excellent support of this mattress, a result of the durable base foam, which conformed without molding to our bodies.

We felt the Purple offered good spinal alignment, and after a month there were no visible indentations or signs of wear. In fact, the mattress looked good as new, a sign of solid durability. After that month, we also noticed our sleep quality continued to improve.

In our testing, this firm mattress worked well for back and side sleeping, but it proved to create some mild pain when we tried sleeping on our stomachs. Delivery was a breeze, as the mattress arrived with a simple 10-minute setup process, though it did take two full days to expand to size.

We also like that Purple provides a 100-night trial and a 10-year warranty, so you can quite literally rest assured (of its quality).

What We Like

  • Comfortable for back and stomach sleeping

  • Excellent support

  • Helps with spinal alignment

  • Resilient memory foam

What We Don't Like

  • Does have an adjustment period

  • Limited pressure relief

If you’re looking for a high-quality and highly supportive firm mattress, but you don’t want to take out a bank loan, we suggest Tuft + Needle’s Mint Mattress. When we laid on this mattress, we were impressed by how evenly it distributed our weight, offered excellent support, and comfortably conformed to our bodies.

While we did feel a bit of a bounce when we first sat or laid atop this memory foam mattress, we found it does a great job of isolating motion thanks to its three-layered foam construction. Those same layers work to conform, making our bodies feel enveloped, which improved our overall sleep quality.

Just be mindful it did take some adjusting for us to get used to the Mint before we fully reaped the benefits. When laying on it, we were able to feel the firmness and support, which left our spines feeling nicely aligned. Over the course of a month, we also found the foam proved to be resilient as well; even with consistent usage, there are no visible indentations or signs of wear.

Do be aware that while we felt supported, we didn’t find this mattress to offer much in the way of pressure relief, despite the brand’s claims that the T&N Adaptive Foam would provide it. Lastly, we found it to work well for back and stomach sleeping, but it felt too firm for us in the side sleeping position.

What We Like

  • Soft yet supportive

  • Luxurious, body-hugging responsiveness

  • Helps limit tossing and turning

  • Comfortable for every sleep position

What We Don't Like

  • Thick for average bed frames

For couples looking to upgrade their sleep with a firmer option, we love the Purple Rejuvenate Mattress, which we found limits motion transfer and works for different sleep positions equally well.

This luxe mattress made us feel like we were floating thanks to its comfort and support, and we slept impressively well during our month-long testing period. While we did experience mild sinking in with this mattress, it’s in a completely even way; there’s no sensation of collapsing.

The Rejuvenate offers the perfect blend of softness and resistance, and it felt like it was hugging our lower backs, knees, and ankles. It offered us firm support from head to toe, aiding in keeping our spines aligned as well. It also helped us to stop tossing and turning, which is particularly helpful for co-sleepers.

When side sleeping, we didn’t feel like our hips were sinking in too much to cause pain, while Purple’s unique bounce-back Grid helped to provide uniform support as well. Edge to edge coils help to create uniform support throughout this mattress, and they’re also individually wrapped.

Just be aware that this is the second most expensive option on our list at over $5,000 for a queen size, which can be a bit prohibitive. It’s also very thick, measuring at 15.5 inches tall, which may be too high for many average bed frames.

Type: Hybrid | Material: Foam, coils, viscose, polyester, lycra, rayon | Firmness: Firm | Thickness: 15.5 inches

What We Like

  • Flippable design

  • Offers lumbar support and lowers spinal stress

  • Temperature-regulating open-cell foam

What We Don't Like

  • Returns aren’t free

  • May have an adjustment period

If standard firm mattresses just aren’t getting it done for you, let us introduce you to the Plank Firm by Brooklyn Bedding, one of the firmest mattresses available on the market. As the name implies, this mattress isn’t joking around with its firmness, using high-density foams that are thick and dense. Ranking at a ten on the firmness scale, this option is suited to people who leave their beds at night to sleep on the floor.

The benefits of a mattress this firm include excellent promotion of spinal alignment, while also offering lumbar support and lowering stress on the spine. Additionally, if you find this option is too extreme for you, you can opt to flip it to the other side, which provides more of a medium firm feel.

Beyond the exceptional firmness, this mattress uses foams with open cell technology to wick away body heat and you can also upgrade and order it with the GlacioTex cooling cover for added cooling support. Lastly, you'll enjoy free shipping and a 120-night trial when you purchase this mattress.

Of course, it’s important to understand that with this level of firmness, even when it's needed for all-night comfort or support, there can be a bit of an adjustment period. Also, despite having a lengthy trial, there is a fee for returning this mattress should you decide it’s not the right fit.

Type: Foam | Material: Foam | Firmness: Extra firm | Thickness: 11.75 inches

What We Like

  • Heat-dissipating cooling layer

  • Body-conforming support

  • Offers pressure point relief

What We Don't Like

  • Short warranty period

If money isn’t a factor and you're a hot sleeper, we like the Tempur-Pedic’s Tempur-Breeze LuxeBreeze in Firm. We've tested a lot of Tempur-Pedic mattresses, and this one impressed us.

While there are two firmness levels to choose from, we like the Firm option because it features a 13-inch profile that’s specifically designed to have 33 percent more Tempur material for added body-conforming support. All of the layers in this firm option work to alleviate pressure, helping to enhance comfort across the body and ensure a consistent night of sleep free of tossing and turning.

We also like the hybrid design of the Tempur-Breeze, which features over 1,300 springs and three layers of foam and hybrid material for a more responsive overall feel.

But where this mattress really separates itself from others on our list is its focus on cooling. On top, the SmartClimate cover features a dedicated cooling layer meant to help dissipate body heat, all while the brand’s Pure Cool and Pure Cool Plus materials pull heat away from you. A fourth layer of ventilated pressure-relieving material promotes further breathability so warm sleepers can stay comfy.

Just be aware that, despite the costly nature of this mattress, it only has a 10-year warranty, which is short when compared to much more affordable options that offer lifetime warranties, like the Nolah Evolution Mattress (our best value pick).

Type: Hybrid | Material: Foam, coils | Firmness: Firm | Thickness: 13 inches

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for a mattress that offers control over its firmness level, is supremely comfortable, and provides excellent support, our best overall pick the Saatva Solaire Adjustable Firmness Mattress is a great option. If you’re looking for a firm mattress but don’t want to break the bank, we recommend our best budget pick, the Tuft + Needle Mint Mattress, which we found to works well for back and stomach sleeping, all while also offering spinal alignment.

How We Tested the Firm Mattresses

As we tested over 50 mattresses from popular brands and retailers, we assessed each one based on firmness and support, delivery and setup, and sleep comfort.

To determine the ease of delivery and setup for each mattress, we noted what the experience of home delivery was like. We also noted any off-gassing odors upon delivery and setup, and if there was any expansion time before the mattresses could be used.

After an initial assessment for quality and setup, we spent four weeks sleeping on each mattress at home to get a sense of its comfort and support after nightly use.

From there, to judge the firmness and support of each mattress we tested, we used them nightly as we would a typical mattress. A variety of different types of sleepers used these mattresses, providing insight into how each felt for back, side, and stomach sleepers as well as those who sleep with partners, pets, and kids.

We noted how the mattresses felt when initially laying down and throughout the night, as well as after weeks of daily use. We also assessed how our bodies felt in the mornings, paying attention to any increases in sleep comfort or sleep time and any new aches or discomfort.

How to Choose the Best Firm Mattress

Consider Materials Like Foam, Latex, or a Hybrid

Memory foam, hybrid, and latex mattresses can all be firm. The exact firmness of a given mattress and its material, however, depends on what firmness options are offered and how dense or thick the material may be.

For memory foam options, for example, the density of the foam will determine the firmness. Higher-density foams, like those used in the Plank by Brooklyn Bedding Firm (our best extra firm pick), will typically create a more firm feel.

On the other hand, options made with latex like our best overall pick, the Saatva Solaire Adjustable Mattress at Saatva, tend to be more naturally firm on their own.

Consider Thickness and Height

Thickness and height won’t play a factor in the firmness of your mattress, but they are still important to consider when purchasing one. The thickest option on this list is the 15.5-inch-thick best for couples pick, the Purple Rejuvenate Mattress. Thicker mattresses may have more cushioning but they will also lift your bed higher off the ground.

If you already have a high bed frame, then a thicker mattress may create an obstacle to getting into bed. Additionally, if you invest in a thicker mattress, you may have to invest in new sheets that have deep-pocket or extra deep-pocket fitted sheets to ensure that your fitted sheet stays in place.

For something that will work well with high bed frames, the thinnest mattress on this list is the best medium-firm Purple Mattress at 9.25 inches thick.

Look for a Long Trial Period and Warranty

Most major mattress manufacturing brands will provide a trial period to make sure the mattress is a good fit for you.

On the shorter end, you can expect 90 days, while the lengthier trial options, such as our best overall Saatva Solaire, provide a full year to ensure you’re getting what you need from the mattress. Because mattresses can take some time to get used to, a trial period offers you ample chance to make sure that it is or isn’t right for you.

Much like trial periods, lengthy warranties have almost become standard on higher-quality mattresses. As a result, it is wise to be wary of any company that isn’t offering one.

Options like our best budget pick, the Nolah Evolution Mattress, provide a lifetime warranty to leave your purchase feeling completely protected. However, it’s common for other brands to only offer 10 years, like our best splurge Tempur-Pedic Luxe Breeze Medium Hybrid.

All of the options on this list have a warranty of at least 10 years.

Standout Features

Pressure Relief

Unless otherwise indicated and specified in the product’s description, most firm mattresses aren’t geared toward pressure relief. Certain options on our list, like the best splurge Tempur-Pedic Luxe Breeze Medium Hybrid, use coils that can help with pressure relief, but this is a bit of an outlier for firm mattresses.

While they won’t necessarily offer pressure relief, Dr. James Higgins, DPT, OCS, a physical therapist and co-owner of Integrative Physical Therapy of NYC, does note a good firm mattress will “provide support for optimal spinal alignment,” adding that “Anecdotally, my patients with chronic non-specific lower back pain have reported decreased pain after switching over to a firmer mattress than they previously had.”

Motion Transfer

Certain mattresses include design features that promote motion isolation. That is, they offer a method of limiting how much the movement on one side of the bed will affect the person sleeping on the other side.

Memory foam mattresses work well for this, as do options with individually wrapped coils, like our best for couples Purple Rejuvenate Mattress, because the coils move independently of one another.

Certifications

Many higher-quality mattress companies will exclusively use materials that are certified for certain purposes, and these certifications are designed to ensure a level of quality as well as to guarantee a limit, if not complete expulsion, in the number of chemicals being used. For example, CertiPUR-US Certified memory foams must meet standards for emissions, content, durability, and performance (i.e., they will be made without certain materials.)

Other certifications that will commonly be seen in mattresses include GOLS and GOTS certifications. GOLS certifications ensure standards that pertain to manufacturing while also focussing on safety, human health, and the environment (amongst other factors).

GOTS-certified products also focus on socially responsible manufacturing as well as standards for harvesting the materials. One of our favorite options, the best value Nolah Evolution Mattress, is made with CertiPUR-US certified foam and Greenguard Gold certified, which screens for toxic chemicals and VOCs.
